What is a structure file?

A structure file is a small configuration file, named .qontext.structure.md, that lives inside a folder and tells Qontext's agents how that folder should be organized. It never shows up as knowledge content itself, agents don't retrieve it as an answer to a question, it only shapes how new content gets placed into the folder it sits in.

A structure file has two parts: a strictness setting, which sets how confident an agent needs to be before acting on this folder's guidance, and a guidance section, free-form text describing what belongs in the folder, how things should be named, and what explicitly doesn't belong.

Why do structure files exist?

Without a structure file, an agent placing new content into a folder has to infer, from scratch, whether that folder is the right home for it, and that judgment can shift slightly from one run to the next. A structure file removes the guesswork: it states the placement rule once, in the folder itself, so every agent run applies the same standard.

How do structure files work?

Structure files support five strictness levels, permissive, lenient, moderate (the default), firm, and strict, running from acting on anything that plausibly fits to acting only on an unambiguous match. Guidance also cascades down a folder hierarchy: a structure file closer to where content is being placed overrides a more general one further up, so a company can set broad rules high in its repository and narrow, specific rules in individual subfolders. Content that doesn't clear a folder's bar gets skipped.

You create or edit one from the Context tab, opening the Structure file for the folder you want to configure, and the change applies to every subsequent agent run. Every update a structure file causes still shows up in the Changes tab for review, so guiding placement automatically doesn't mean placement happens invisibly.
