What are workspace roles?

Workspace roles are the three-tier system Qontext assigns every workspace member: Owner, Admin, or Member. The Owner is the workspace creator and has full control over all resources, including deleting the workspace itself. A workspace has exactly one owner. Admins are trusted managers who can invite and remove members, change roles, and manage all shared resources like API keys, credentials, and data sources. Members are regular collaborators who can create and use resources but can only update or delete what they created themselves.

Why do workspace roles exist?

A workspace usually has more than one person touching shared resources, and not everyone needs the same reach. Workspace roles set that baseline before anything else narrows it, deciding who can manage the membership list and who can touch resources they didn't create, independent of any single file's settings. Without that baseline, who can invite someone, remove them, or change what they're allowed to do would have to be decided resource by resource instead of once at the workspace level.

How do workspace roles work?

Only Owners and Admins can manage workspace membership: inviting new people, removing existing ones, and changing roles. For shared resources, Owners and Admins can update or delete any item, while Members are limited to the resources they created themselves. Admins can't demote their own account; that change has to come from the Owner. This role structure is the workspace-wide baseline that user permissions and access controls then apply on top of, at the level of individual files and folders in the context repository.
